Sustainability
Denfind takes its responsibility to the natural environment on and off site seriously
Carbon Neutral
The Angus sandstone at Denfind Stone has one of the lowest embodied greenhouse gas emission counts for any dimensional stone, this is largely due to the proximity of the quarry to the processing sheds and the commitment to renewable energy and tree planting.
Compared to other man-made building materials, natural stone greenhouse gas emissions are very low, consequently the Angus sandstone is one of the most environmentally favourable products you can use in your project. Historic Environment Scotland, in conjunction with Zero Waste Scotland, have produced a Stone Carbon Calculator to measure greenhouse gas emissions in natural stone. Please use the HES Carbon Calculator spreadsheet below to see how little carbon emissions the products from Denfind Stone will be responsible for in your project:
Angus sandstone is a sustainable, responsible solution for the modern building industry and Denfind Stone is playing its part by returning traditional quality products to today’s market.
Creating quality products with a minimal carbon footprint supports a greener future and respects the geological heritage of Angus sandstone. Denfind Stone is committed to using environmentally friendly and sustainable methods at every stage of the stone production process – from quarry to delivery.

Low carbon emissions and waste
Natural stone products only use a fraction of the energy compared to manufactured alternatives. Denfind Stone works to maximise the benefits of natural stone production and reduce waste at each stage of the manufacturing process, and this contributes to the energy efficiency of residential and commercial developments.
Renewable Energy
Denfind Stone’s quarrying and processing operations all take place on site in Angus, allowing for maximum efficiency and a lasting and positive environmental impact. The business has installed solar panels and a biomass plant to maximise the energy efficiency of the site and the sustainability of the business.
Environmental regeneration
As Denfind Stone expands into a new quarrying area, the old excavation site is returned to its original condition through a reinstatement programme which includes tree and shrub planting, seeding out and landscaping.
Environmental measures
The Denfind Stone production facilities have installed an innovative LEV system which has a dampened down discharge to eliminate discharge of silica dust on site and beyond. The technology helps to capture emission at source and transport it to a safe dispersal point. This means that no dust from the processing facility can escape into the environment. The impact and effectiveness of the system is monitored constantly.
Proximity to raw materials
The location of Denfind Stone is extremely important and the processing facility was built as close as possible to the source of stone. Less energy is required to transport the stone from its origin to the processing machinery which makes it more environmentally efficient.
The future
The site at Monikie will continue its journey to be carbon neutral by increasing the use of solar panels, biomass heating and self-generating oxygen on site. More vehicles will be fuelled by power generated on site and the natural waste of the quarrying process will continue to be turned into usable building and landscaping products.
